Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
Dear Lord, we are in a season of hope, a time of year when we remember the hope of Your people, and when we get in touch with our own hope. There are so many things for which we hope, Lord: for health, for success, for safety, for peace. We hope that things will be better next year than they were this year. We hope that the violence permeating our world will cease. We hope wars will end and hunger will be eradicated.
Yet, as noble as our hopes might be, You are the only certain hope. You alone are truly faithful. You alone deserve our full confidence. So even as we hope for many good things, we remember to put our hope most of all in You.
As we consider our hope, Lord, and as we call out to You in this season of Advent, may Your steadfast love be upon us, even now. Though the world is not as we wish it to be, not as it one day will be, and though our lives fall short of our expectations, Your love satisfies us. Your love, given in Christ and renewed within us through the Spirit, keeps us centered in You, O God our hope.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
